Happy New Year! I'm hoping everyone had a wonderful holiday.
Reminder: We do not have school on January 2nd. We are returning January 3rd.
This week we will be getting back into a normal routine!! Hopefully students have practiced their word wall lists. On Friday we will have a test of all 78 words. Remember these are words that are recognized by sight.
We will continue with our author unit of Jan Brett books. We will also be starting a unit on polar regions. We will be exploring animals that live in these regions.
We are finishing up unit 5 in our math books and will have a unit and mid year assessment within the first two weeks of January.
Our spelling words for the week are: must, cut, rug, bus, but, hug, our, bring, city, giant. Bonus Words are: penguin, scarf and mitten.

The Week of December 19th
Twas the week before Christmas! We will be like busy elves this week. On Monday we will be working on a project with the 8th graders. On Wednesday we will be dressing in PJ's and watching the Polar Express with Mrs. DiRenzo's class. On Thursday we will see a special assembly and on Friday will be our class party. I'd like to have all the pizza money in by Monday if possible.
In between times we will have a subtraction test up to 10 on Tuesday and we will schedule our spelling test for Thursday.
Spelling words for the week are: fun, run, up, cup, stuff, puff, jump, more, skip and swim. Bonus words are: gingerbread, North Pole and Santa Claus
Word Wall Words for the next two weeks are: jump, more, sleep, time, with, bring, carry, hold, our, us

The Week of December 12th
This week we will be studying about different December Holidays. Students will learn about Hanukkah and Kwanza as well as some different Christmas traditions.
In math we will be continuing with place value using base ten blocks and "greater than" and "less than" models.
Our dog friends will be visiting us on Wednesday.

The Week of December 5th
This week we will learn about December Holidays. We will start our Unit 3 Scott Foresman books. We will also finish up Unit 4 in Everyday Math.
We are looking forward to our concert and our holiday shopping. Both of these events will be on Wednesday.

This week brings the end of November and the beginning of the excitement of December.
We will be starting a new unit on homes around the world. Our dog friends will be visiting us on Wednesday. The students will be practicing for their concert on the 7th.

The Week of November 21st.
I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and healthy Thanksgiving!

This week we will concentrate on families. We will discuss how each family is special yet can be different than another friend's family.
In math we will finish up Unit 3 and have a test. We will begin Unit 4 with thermometers and measuring.
Our therapy dogs will be visiting on Wednesday. The students will write Thanksgiving cards for them.

The Week of November 7th
What a wonderful end to a crazy week! Thank you to all the parents who organized, contributed and helped at our Halloween Party. The class and I had a wonderful time.
Don't forget this week is all 1/2 days. Lunch is not served. We will not have spelling words for this shortened week.

The Week of October 31st
I can't believe that November is here!!
This will certainly be another busy week. Halloween is always an exciting day with the parade and party at 2:00. Remember we can not send home any candy.
On Wednesday we will have an author visit and have our dog friends visit us also.
Family posters are due this week. I can't wait to display them in the hallway.
After we start off the week with Halloween we will learn about popcorn and air pop some ourselves. We will also learn about patriotic songs and some American symbols. We will also begin our family unit.
We our first spelling test and everyone did quite well!

The Week of October 24th
This week is Red Ribbon Week. Check out the different school-wide activities on the OCS homepage.
This week we will start having spelling words. Each week students will have to homework assignments using the list. Please study with your child each night. We are also adding to our word wall list. Every two weeks I will add ten new words. It would be helpful to study with your child each night. Making flash cards are an easy way to practice.
Students have been researching facts on spiders and bats this week. Hopefully they've been sharing what they've learned. We will continue with owls and skeletons this week.
Spelling words for this week are: at, cat, sat, ran, an, man, will, no, dad, mom. Bonus Words are: pumpkin, spider and ghost.

The Week of October 17th
Another busy week in first grade!!! The Oxford Fire Department will be visiting the school this week. I'm sure the class will be excited. Also on Wednesday our therapy dogs will be back to listen to the students read.
This week we will be finishing up Unit 1 of our Scott Foresman books. Watch for the first completed practice book to come home. We will be taking a test during the week.
We will be learning about all sorts of "Creepy" things this week--including bats, skeletons, spiders and owls. In math we will be doing number lines and more odd and even numbers. Students will be introduced to telling time to the half hour.

The Week of October 10th
We had a wonderful week last week. We enjoyed meeting our new classmate and our Therapy Dogs. The children were thrilled to read to them. They will visit us again next week.
This week we will continue learning about fall. We'll talk more about trees and changes in the fall. We learn about squirrels and some other animals that make their homes in the trees. Of course we'll learn about Christopher Columbus and begin to talk about fire safety.
In math we will continue counting coins with nickels and pennies, discuss patterns and continue to learn about even and odd numbers.

The Week of October 3rd
This will be a wonderful first week of October. We will continue counting combinations of nickels and pennies. If you get a chance practice at home by playing store. Have you child exchange nickels for five pennies. In the car count by fives. You can even practice math facts.
We went to the library on Friday. Please return the book this coming Friday so that your child can take out another one. On weeks when we don't have school on Fridays we will keep the books for two weeks.
The class is excited to have our therapy dogs visit us. This will be on Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Edkins have 4 wonderful dogs. They usually bring 2 each time they visit. They will visit us approximately every two weeks.
This week is "Respect Week" We will learn about respecting others and respecting our school. We will also learn how important trees are.

It's hard to believe that this is the last week in September! Time flies when you're having Fun!!!
This week will be a busy week in first grade. On Monday we will learn about Johnny Appleseed and taste different kinds of apples. We will continue to learn about bears this week. We have been comparing fiction and nonfiction books about bears. We will work on a book about our furry friends.
In math we will be working on time to the hour and starting to count pennies and nickels. We will use a ruler as a straightedge and work on counting by 2's and 5's.

The Week of September 19th
It was a pleasure meeting most of you at Back to School Night. I am looking forward to an exciting year! Thank you to those of you who volunteered to help organize or donate party items. Remember for holiday as well as birthdays we need to get the food items cleared by the nurse.

The Week of September 12th
We had a wonderful first week of school. We survived the rain and were glad to see the sunshine on Friday! This week we will start our Scott Foresman reading program and continue our Everyday Math introduction. Homework will begin on Monday. Please be sure to have your child return it each day.

The Week of September 6
What a great start we had this morning! I am looking forward to working with all your children. This week we will concentrate on getting to know each other and to work on first grade routines. There are many forms coming home today. Please try and fill them out and return ASAP.
