The Week of September 30th

I can't believe October is here!  This month we will be studying bats, owls, spiders, squirrels and autumn after finishing our unit on bears.  Again we will be comparing fiction and nonfiction books on these topics.  Around the middle of the month we will be finishing unit 1 in our Scott Foresman series and then we will be starting having spelling words each week in addition to word wall words every two weeks.

In math this week we are concentrating in addition facts to 6, telling time to the hour, and counting pennies and nickels.

The Week of September 23rd

It was so nice to meet most of you last week at Back to School Night. I look forward to working with you and your wonderful children for the rest of the year.  If you ever have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me or stop in.  I usually get to school by 7:30 and usually remain after school until at least 4.

This week we will continue our study of bears which we started last week.  We are learning characteristics of bears, different kinds of bears and where they are found in the world.  We are comparing different fictional stories about bears and doing an author study of the bear stories of Frank Asche.

In math we will continue working toward fluency of addition facts and will learn time to the hour.

The Week of September 16th

This week the students will begin learning about bears.  They will learn about different types and how they have adapted to their habitats. Tuesday is Constitution Day and we will have a character education assembly. We will continue reviewing familiar word wall words and working within a reading group.  We will have our Unit 1 test and a test on addition facts up to five.  Remember that Tuesday is a half day.  I am looking forward to meeting many of you on Tuesday Night!

The Week of September 9

I have enjoyed meeting and getting to know your children.  We concentrated on getting to know each other and first grade routines.  This week homework will begin.  Please have your children return the homework each day.  This week we will continue reviewing and getting into the schedule of each day.
Reminder:  students are not to wear sandals  to school.
